Asbestos tiles were routinely installed in homes and buildings throughout most of the twentieth century. Normally, these asbestos tiles were suspended from the ceiling which created a space between the tiles and the roof. Having these spaces helped to reduce noise and also provided a place for HVAC equipment and ducts.
Other names for these types of ceilings were acoustic ceilings and drop ceilings. They were especially ideal for school buildings and offices because of the noise reduction. The problem was that these asbestos tiles, once damaged or disturbed, could release asbestos into the air where the HVAC system could then blow the deadly fibers to areas throughout the building.
Suspended asbestos ceilings that are most easily spotted through visual means are those that have a pattern of holes, but other types of asbestos tiles can also be found. In addition, textured ceilings such as acoustic popcorn ceilings often contain asbestos.
